MD DATA vs MiniDisc

MD DATA disks can contain 140 MB
- the disk can contain an 18 minute and 43 second 8-track song.
- so, less tracks mean more recording time.
- eg. this means, with a quarter of the number of tracks, your recording time quadruples: 74 min and 52 sec (4 x 1123 = 4495 sec)
- which is, by chance, the exact total recording time for a normal 74 minute MiniDisc with 2 tracks (=stereo).
- well maybe this is not by chance.

The conventional method of multitrack recording is to assign input channels to group buses that feed signals to the recording device. On the MD8 this is called group recording (GRP). In addition to group recording, the MD8 features direct recording (DIR), which allows you to record input channels 1 to 8 directly to tracks 1 to 8, effectively bypassing the group buses. Each method has its pros and cons.
