What makes a sound?

Knowing that the presence or absence of certain harmonics in a sound, is responsible for recognizing the difference between a violin or a trumpet, a flute or a dog barking, a male voice or a female voice. Harmonics are very important. Which harmonics make what kind of sound? (consonant formant tables)
